Though Darth Vader's unforgettable voice was recorded by the inimitable James Earl Jones, the physical, in-suit performance was carried out by former bodybuilder David Prowse.

Despite bringing an unmistakable physicality to the part, Prowse has had a complicated relationship with the franchise, largely due to his fraught dealings with George Lucas.

The animosity is alleged to stem from Prowse leaking The Empire Strikes Back's big parentage twist, which many claim caused Lucas to cast Sebastian Shaw in the role of the scarred, dying Anakin at the end of Return of the Jedi.

Prowse also ended up banned from Star Wars conventions in 2010, which he believes was due to his taking part in the Lucas-critical 2010 documentary The People vs. George Lucas.

In a recent interview, Prowse savagely said of his time making the movies:

"I’ve only got one favourite memory of filming Star Wars and that is when my very first cheque arrived."

Prowse added that his wife considers Star Wars an "intrusion" on their life, and in late 2016 he officially retired from public appearances citing both his ailing health and the requests of his family.
