3. Christian Bale Suddenly Doesn't Want To Sing And Dance - Newsies

Long before he was thumping Jokers and Thors or picking up Academy Awards for his work, a young Christian Bale found himself singing and dancing his way through Disney's Newsies back in 1992... against his will, mind.

That's because, heading into the project, the already driven star had next to no intentions of ever making a musical. He'd even go as far as to tell Movieline:

"I never had any interest in doing a musical. I still don't. In fact, when I first read the script, I thought it wasn't a musical. Later, after I realized it was, I asked Kenny (Ortega) if maybe I could duck over here into the pub while the numbers were going on, and then come out when it was over."

Sadly, Bale couldn't ultimately find a way to be "the lead in a musical without doing any singing and dancing" and wound up biting the jazz-hands bullet. But Bale's doubts about the concept of strutting his stuff in this particular setting weren't entirely unwarranted, with the film eventually being widely criticised aside from his showing.

Clearly leaving a bitter taste in the Batman star's mouth, Bale would also go on record as saying "...even then I knew I’d never do anything like that again.”
