10 Actors Who Just Stopped Trying

1. Al Pacino

No one on this list has become more of a caricature of himself than Al Pacino. More of a cautionary tale than a bonafide thespian, Pacino has played exactly one role in the last two decades: An obscene, overacting scene-chewer who may or may not have an attachment to the mob. It's been almost unanimously downhill since he let out that second "hoo-ah" in Scent of a Woman. Ever since, Pacino has gotten the bright idea that nuance isn't worth the trouble, and that it's both easier and more rewarding to ham it up all day long. (Winning an Oscar for that role certainly didn't help matters.) It doesn't matter what's in the script. You're going to get the same Pacino every damn time. Is it a high-minded drama? Then he'll try not to smirk so much. Is it a comedy? Then he'll put a little more emphasis on the curse words. Is it a PG film? Then what the f--k are you doing casting Al Pacino, you maniac? Honestly, though, Pacino gave one of the greatest performances of the last century as Michael Corleone, so the guy has earned the right to take his foot off the gas every once in a while. But for nearly twenty years, Pacino's been stuck in neutral. Which other actors belong on this list? Share your picks below in the comments thread.
