1. Roberto Benigni - Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar (1999)
Won An Oscar For: Life is Beautiful (1997) Actor and comedian Robert Benigni, often dubbed "the Italian Robin Williams," won an incalculable number of awards for his role in the drama film Life is Beautiful, in which he played a father trying to protect his son from the horrors of the holocaust. Benigni's win should've set off a chain of events that would have resulted in him appearing in a number of wonderful films thereafter, but that never happened. Instead, he went away for a year and came back in Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar, a completely unfunny adaptation of the long-running comic book of the same name. What's more, Benigni didn't play either of the titular characters: instead, he appeared as Lucius Detritus, the wacky villain of the film. Benigni followed this with an even worse picture in 2002, a completely bonkers adaptation of Pinocchio in which he himself played Pinocchio. There's a reason you don't hear much about Benigni any more... Like this article? What do you make of these post-Oscar performances? How do you think the actors mentioned here have fared ever since?
