10 Actors Who Make Everything They're In Better

1. Philip Seymour Hoffman

The late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman spent his entire career making movies better with his presence. A powerhouse star with a booming voice and charming vulnerability, he worked with everyone from the Coen Brothers to Paul Thomas Anderson and Cameron Crowe, and never once turned in a bad performance.

Mysterious in his life both on and off screen, Hoffman was known for playing eccentric supporting characters, general misfits, troubled addicts, and the occasional towering antagonists. His best roles can be found in The Master, Capote and Savages, but he also shone in the otherwise terrible rom-com Along Came Polly.

Considering the tragic circumstances of his own life and death, it makes sense that Hoffman was so accomplished at portraying grief and uncertainty on-screen. His best roles often found him battling an internal struggle, and offering audiences a piece of himself with characters as flawed as they were relatable or helpless.

It didn't matter whether he was turning up in a disaster flick like Twister or an ensemble epic like Magnolia, Philip Seymour Hoffman was the best when it comes to making a film better just by being there. The fact that he left us so soon doesn't change that - in fact, it makes his influence all the more poignant.
