Chinatown is one of those films you may not have seen, but it's widely regarded as a classic, and you've doubtless seen countless homages without even noticing it, but that doesn't mean that making it was easy, or even fun. That's what you get when you mix strong personalities. Dunaway had a reputation for being difficult, Polanski had one for being controlling.

What began as simmering tension boiled over when Polanski pulled a hair from her head because it was catching the light, without so much as a warning. An argument erupted, and a furious Dunaway stormed off the set.

Still, Dunaway got the last laugh; after being denied a bathroom break while shooting, she urinated in a cup and then threw it in Polanski's face.

To their credit, both admire each other's work, and Dunaway has gone on the record and claimed that Chinatown is among her finest films, netting her an Oscar nomination; still, it takes a special kind of animosity to toss a glass of piss in someone's face.
