10 Actors Who Played Multiple Marvel Roles
9. Rebecca Romijn
First: Mutant shapeshifter whose power allows her to be played by other actors, Mystique in X-Men, X-2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class.
But Then: Tenement squatting Joan, with the ability to nurse the vigilante hero back to life and disappear from the story in The Punisher.
How Did It Work Out?
The only one of Magneto's Brotherhood to outlast the original X-Men film, face-changing Mystique remains Romijn's best known role and one that she would return to on three more occasions. Largely, however, the leggy former model was cast for her ability to look good basically naked and covered in blue body paint.
As a physical performance, Mystique was a good role for Romijn, but didn't offer much to sink her teeth into acting-wise. Her final appearance in the part, in 2011's First Class, was a cameo passing the baton to Jennifer Lawrence, playing a version of Mystique with far more complex, interesting characterisation.
In the meantime she had cropped up in probably the best of the three failing takes on Marvel's skull shirted vigilante The Punisher. Accompanied by fellow mutant Ben Foster (The Last Stand's Angel), Romijn showed up as a tenement dweller mostly just there to nurse Frank Castle back to health. It is unlikely to be as well remembered as her Mystique, even with J-Law taking over.
