10 Actors Who Played Multiple Marvel Roles
5. Ray Stevenson
First: Vengeful vigilante Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone.
But Then: Burly boozy warrior Volstagg in Thor and Thor: The Dark World.
How Did It Work Out?
Separate from the mainstream MCU, but still owned by Marvel Studios, Marvel Knights (like its print namesake) attempted to tell more adult and less mainstream stories. Punisher: War Zone was the first of these and its failure (along with Marvel Knights' only other production Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance) basically put an end to the whole project.
With Marvel's partner Lionsgate having final cut (rather than director Lexi Alexander), the final film was an uninspiring mess and Stevenson in the title role failed to dislodge the memory of the previous movie's more popular Thomas Jane (who returned in slick fan-film short Dirty Laundry).
While his second Marvel movie saw him dropping from the lead to a relatively minor comic relief sidekick (although at least he gets more screen time than the other two of the Warriors Three), Stevenson seems more at home as the mirthful Volstagg in Thor than he did as the humourless Punisher. Sure to return for Ragnarok in 2017, his is a reliable if unspectacular role within the MCU.
