How Did It Work Out?
For a self-confessed comic book geek who named himself after a Marvel character (Powerman Luke Cage, soon to be seen on Netflix), it shouldn't really come as a surprise that Cage has played more than one Marvel hero. (Although naming his son Kal-El never led to the fulfilment of a long cherished desire to play Superman).
Cage, who has a Ghost Rider tattoo that the film had to cover up, lobbied strongly for the part of Johnny Blaze and performed the role with his trademark lack of restraint. The films, though, were dull and unimaginative.
The Wild At Heart star's oddball performance style was a far better fit for Matthew Vaughn's off-the-wall take on Mark Millar's Kick-Ass (published by Marvel's creator-led Icon Imprint). Playing cop-turned-vigilante Big Daddy, Cage turned in a bizarre performance that entertainingly aped Adam West's classic Batman.
The film lost a bit of its spark after Big Daddy's demise and Cage's presence was certainly one of the many things missed in the misjudged sequel.
