10 Actors Who Received Super Specific Training For Movie Roles
7. Tom Cruise Went Undercover As A UPS Delivery Man To Test His Ability To Blend In - Collateral
Tom Cruise may not have received any Oscar love for his performance as calculating assassin Vincent in Michael Mann's Collateral, but it's nevertheless an impressively transformative, against-type turn and easily one of the best of his entire storied career.
Director Mann is well-known for the "homework" he gives actors before stepping onto set, and in addition to putting Cruise through an intense weapons training program, also insisted he work on his undercover tradecraft.
Before filming the iconic nightclub shootout sequence, Mann wanted to test whether or not Cruise could truly blend into a crowd without being recognised.
And so, the filmmaker ordered him to go undercover as a UPS delivery man - Mann says FedEx but the uniform is clearly UPS - and see if he could deliver a package without his true identity being ascertained.
And Cruise did just that, donning the UPS duds complete with a hat and sunglasses to deliver a package, and even sitting down to make conversation with a nearby randomer.
Unlike almost every other entry on this list, there's also fascinating hidden video footage of Cruise getting the job done:
