A few years ago, it really seemed like Dane DeHaan's career was going to take off huge, but as of late he's unfortunately stagnated in a series of ill-advised and disappointing ventures, culminating in the avalanche of bad career choices that was his 2017.

It all kicked off with A Cure for Wellness near the start of the year, which received mixed reviews but completely tanked at the box office, barely making half its $40 million budget back.

Then he followed up with the Luc Besson-directed Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which again received mixed reviews and only barely scraped back its $209 million budget, making it a box office bomb. Fans and critics alike widely considered DeHaan incredibly miscast, unfit to play the chisel-jawed protagonist and Cara Delevingne's love interest.

And finally came Tulip Fever, a long-delayed period drama that was widely expected to be an Oscar contender during production, but finally released some three years after it was shot, it in fact turned out to be an unintentionally hilarious disaster.

The film scored an horrendous 8% with critics and failed to make even one-third of its $25 million budget back, with DeHaan again being singled out as miscast as the romantic hero and love interest of Alicia Vikander.

DeHaan has only one movie slated for release next year, Vincent D'Onofrio's latest directorial effort The Kid, in which DeHaan plays famous outlaw Billy the Kid. It really seems like DeHaan is actively trying to become the most consistently miscast actor in the world.

Worse than anything, though, 2017 has made it clear to studios that the actor needs to be cast as a supporting player, because his presence as a lead just can't sell films to audiences.
