10 Actors Who Turned Down Roles In MCU Movies

6. Jason Momoa- Guardians Of The Galaxy

Joaquin Phoenix Dr Strange
HBO

The Rejected Role: Monstrous brute Drax the Destroyer, played by Dave Bautista.

What Happened?: Some folks knew Momoa from the sci-fi series Stargate: Atlantis, but the majority of use know him from his Season One role as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones. Though that role was short-lived, Momoa impressed a lot of people, including James Gunn who offered him the role of the most literal badass in the galaxy. While Momoa liked the role, he thought it was time to show off some of his other muscles.

It didn’t really fit in my time because I’ve done so many things where I don’t say much and I’m colored up and I have my shirt off again. I made a conscious choice to turn down some movies that were action-based to direct Road to Paloma so people could see that side…. It’s not that it’s not a good role, it just wasn’t the right thing.

For Better Or Worse?

Momoa himself said that Bautista was perfect for the role and it's hard to argue with him. Such a touching and hilarious performance from the WWE star was completely unexpected and he nearly stole the film.

Momoa, while good in GOT, has been fairly lackluster in starring turns like Conan the Barbarian. Maybe he'll have more luck with his turn as Aquaman.
