The Rejected Role: Hope van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym and future The Wasp, played by Evangeline Lilly.

What Happened?: Chastain is one of the finest working actors today and has had a fairly impressive run of films recently. In the last five years, she's appeared in such films as Tree of Life, Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar, A Most Violent Year and The Martian. Marvel was apparently looking to add to that winning streak. Chastain was open to the possibility, but had some fair concerns:

“We’ve talked about aligning our forces in the future. And here’s the thing with me… If you’re going to be in a superhero movie, you only get one chance. You’re that character forever. So why do a superhero movie and play the boring civilian?”

In the end, she was offered the female lead in Ant-Man and it just didn't have enough ass-kicking for her tastes.

For Better Or Worse?

While Lilly was fine in the role, Hope was yet another underwritten female character in the MCU. Chastain can't be blamed for turning down the role as it was lacking those strengths she seemed to be looking for.

Interestingly, the character will become a titular superhero in the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Maybe Chastain will end up regretting her decision.
