10 Actors Who Won Oscars For The Wrong Movie

7. Kate Winslet - The Reader

Denzel Washington
Paramount Pictures

Making a name for herself as one of this generations most compelling actors, Kate Winslet's win for the 2008 drama The Reader was a long time coming.

Playing Hanna Schmitz, a woman accused of being a guard at a Nazi concentration camp during the war, Winslet eats up the role and secured her first (and so far only) Oscar win. It was a meaty and thrilling role, brilliantly performed within an otherwise messy movie.

Before her win, she had been nominated five Academy Awards. Her roles in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Titanic and Iris were all acting masterclasses, all screaming out for an Academy victory, but alas it was not meant to be.

Her win for The Reader, then, whilst rightly earned, shouldn't have been her first win, and due to how much she'd put into her work before then, it's a shame that the win seems more like an award for her body of work rather than her performance in the winning film.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
