10 Actors Who Won Oscars For The Wrong Movie
6. Whoopi Goldberg - Ghost
Whoopi Goldberg's extremely eccentric scene stealing performance as psychic Oda Mae Brown was very well received when Ghost was released in 1990, and outside of the famous pottery scene, it is Goldberg's performance most movie-goers remember from the film.
But it's not quite her best role, and shouldn't have led to her first win, given her powerful, career-making role in Steven Spielberg's The Colour Purple.
Her role as protagonist Celie still stands as one of cinema's greatest ever debut acting performances, and for good reasons. Goldberg was ultimately nominated, but lost to Geraldine Page in The Trip to Bountiful.
One good thing that came from Goldberg's belated Oscar win was the fact that it allowed her to become one of only sixteen artists to secure an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards), and the first African American to achieve such a rare and impressive feat. It would have been better if she'd won for The Colour Purple, though.
