10 Actors Whose Casting Made Comic Book Movies More Credible

2. Willem Dafoe: The Green Goblin/Norman Osborn in Spider-Man (2002)

An Oscar winner known for playing strong, often unusual, roles, and with a memorable look. You wouldn€™t call him classically handsome, but he is undeniably cinematic and charismatic. Spider-Man had an excellent all-round cast, and Tobey Maguire made a perfect Peter Parker, but superhero films do need someone big to fill the villain€™s shoes, and Dafoe did that admirably. In many ways, it was a shame when he was the Green Goblin, because when he was Norman Osborn, he was the best thing in the scene. It€™s hard to know if Norman Osborn was always mad, or if the performance-enhancing drugs pushed him into madness, because Dafoe plays the character as though there€™s always something scratching away under the veneer of control. There€™s a constant boiling energy to Dafoe that is worthy of the Goblin€™s character. And without a great villain, there can€™t be a great hero.
