After an insanely dedicated yet ultimately ill-judged mockumentary, Joaquin Phoenix returned to feature films in 2012 and delivered two of the best performances of his career in quick succession. Although he doesn't work as frequently as many of his peers, Phoenix is all-but-guaranteed to deliver a strong performance anytime he appears in a movie. Truly a student of his craft, the actor has excelled in movies as diverse as Gladiator, Signs, Walk the Line (for which he won a Grammy for the soundtrack), The Master and most recently in Spike Jonze's Her, a turn that really should have seen him nominated for Best Actor.
