10 Actors You Never Knew Directed A Movie

5. Gary Oldman - Nil By Mouth (1997)

Arnold Schwarzenegger, auteur
20th Century Fox

Gary Oldman is one of the UK's finest actors, and is also the very definition of a working actor. His IMDb profile lists 106 acting credits and he's only 62. However, even with that prolific credit list to his name, as of 2020 he has only directed one movie.

In 1997, Gary Oldman made both his directorial and writing debut with Nil by Mouth. The movie starred Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke, and depicted an unflinchingly grim portrayal of a family's life in South East London. The movie is damn good, and has a number of feathers in its cap too. There's Kathy Burke's performance, which got best actress at Cannes. There's the two BAFTAs it won for Best British Film, and Best Original Screenplay. Then there's also the fact it features a word that rhymes with 'punt' a staggering 82 times, which is more than any other movie, ever.

When you consider all of the movie's credentials and awards, it's just as staggering that Oldman hasn't directed since.
