10 Alien Invasion Movies Where Humanity Loses
8. They Live (1988)
If you came to chew bubblegum and kick ass, but are all out of bubblegum, then They Live has an alien invasion for you. Released at the height of the '80s action horror silliness, John Carpenter's light-hearted flick adapts Ray Nelson’s short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" , and shows not only what would happen if the Earth was secretly ruled by alien overlords, but what would happen if Roddy Piper were the man who uncovered them.
Armed with a special pair of sunglasses that reveal the Earth’s ruling class to be skeletal aliens, Piper’s Nada discovers a global conspiracy to manipulate humanity into consuming more, breeding endlessly and conforming to the status quo. Unfortunately, the aliens have taken over; humanity has already lost, and even though they have been revealed, no amount of kicking ass is going to change that.
Even with the alien transmitter destroyed, and their presence revealed to humanity at the end of the film, the aliens already have it made; our knowledge of their presence and their messaging may be inconvenient, but it is hardly more than a blip in a long-term plan that has already come to fruition. They have the power, the money and the control, and are very much the Earth's new overlords - except now we know it!
And that's different from reality how?
