10 All-Star Cast Whodunnits To Watch Before Knives Out

8. Murder On The Orient Express (1974 & 2017)

A Shot In The Dark Peter Sellars
Fox

The original movie starred Albert Finney, whose portrayal of the famed detective Hercule Poirot was career-defining and could be the best among the lot. As with a lot of Agatha Cristie's books, a real-life crime story inspired a central plot point of the story. In this case, it was the Lindbergh kidnapping, dubbed one of the trails of the century by various media outlets.

The movie and the book, by default, certainly popularized the everyone-did-it trope. It doesn't hurt that the murder victim played by Richard Widmark in the original and Johnny Depp in the remake is such a vile and repulsive man that it feels justified when the big reveal happens. For once, it makes sense that even the detective might be willing to turn a blind eye in the end.

Both versions have an impressive and LOADED star cast. It is incredible to see both directors Sidney Lumet (for the original) and Kenneth Branagh (for the remake) using their well-earned clout to get the illustrious cast for their respective movies. The remake might be considered an inferior fare but is still an interesting watch. It is also intriguing to realize how Agatha Christie managed to spin a compelling yarn around a tragic real-life crime and how the movies manage to be worthy of the source material.
