10 All-Star Cast Whodunnits To Watch Before Knives Out

7. A Shot In The Dark (1964)

A Shot In The Dark Peter Sellars
United Artists

Inspector Clouseau is a shining example supporting character who breaks out and becomes more prominent than the entire series. The Pink Panther involved the theft of a pink diamond called, well, the pink panther, and the various characters trying to retrieve it. But Peter Sellers was so popular in the role that Blake Edwards, the director, took an unrelated source material and turned it into the sequel.

The beautiful thing is that many of the exaggerated mannerisms and quirks, including the ridiculous French accent Clouseau, became famous for, along with his martial arts expert manservant, Cato, actually came from the second movie. Now that Peter Sellers got an entire film to showcase the character, he dials it up and how.

As a Shot in the Dark is a movie that took a stage play and turned it into a comic caper, it does show. It spends less time around the mystery aspects of the film than it does in showcasing Seller's iconic character. But as a comic murder mystery where a ton of chaos happens, it is a fun classic.
