4. The Hallucination Escape - The Descent
The Descent is a movie about what happens when a bunch of women go exploring an underground cave system, and the terror that awaits them when they discover that there are monsters living down there with a taste for human flesh. At the end of the movie, just a single character, Sarah, has managed to survive the ordeal. Just when we think she's going to perish with the rest, she manages to escape from the cave, get into her car, and drive away. Phew. But then the movie decides to double back on itself for no real reason, almost as if to to waste our time on purpose - that scene we saw, of the escape, was just the result of a hallucination. In reality, Sarah is still stuck in the cave, having gone a bit crazy, as we hear the monsters approaching her. The end. It's a pointless and genuinely embarrassing way to end the movie, because it's just so lame. Worst of all, it stops The Descent from reaching classic horror movie status, which is a shame, given how tense and fresh the rest of the picture is.
