9. Knock Knock
Knock Knock rather quietly popped in and out of British cinemas back in June, but it's on DVD this month just in time to get another airing at Halloween. The film, from Hostel director Eli Roth, follows Keanu Reeves' family man as he gets drawn into a deadly game by two young women (including Roth's real wife Lorenza Izzo), who seduce Reeves' character and then punish him for his infidelity. As you'd perhaps expect from Roth, Knock Knock is something of an uneven cinematic outing, with the inventive nature of the plot somewhat undercut by the fact that Keanu Reeves' performance plays out like Nicolas Cage boring himself to sleep. There is, however, a level of wicked innovation from Roth and the plot unfolds in engagingly depraved fashion. Izzo and fellow tormentor Ana de Armas are intensely committed to their parts and there are liberal lashings of brutality. Despite its storytelling flaws, Knock Knock is an interesting horror film with a rich vein of nastiness running through its centre. It's an ideal watch for Halloween night, when the sweets are being guzzled and the beer is flowing.
