8. The Boy Next Door
Savaged by critics on release, The Boy Next Door could charitably be described as a slightly naff thriller, starring Jennifer Lopez as a teacher who is stalked by a handsome student when she sleeps with him in a moment of weakness. It's the kind of film that would normally be found playing late at night on Channel Five rather than filling several screens of the local multiplex. Lopez is delightfully overblown in the central role and Ryan Guzman turns everything up to eleven as his character veers from charming hunk to sneering psychopath. The plot is nothing short of ridiculous, but it's good fun as Lopez's character is handed bizarre privileges to investigate things that should probably be kept secret from civilians. Everything about the film is contrived, but there's a loveable silliness to it all. By the time Guzman hands Lopez a "first edition" of Homer's Iliad, it's tough not to fall in love with the sheer idiocy of The Boy Next Door.
