10 Alternate Endings That Improve Movies

6. True Romance - Clarence Dies

Quentin Tarantino's original screenplay dictated that Clarence would die at the end, and even though Tony Scott changed this to the more happy, optimistic end of his film, Tarantino does concede that, for the type of film he was venturing to make, it was probably more suitable. Tarantino attested nevertheless that had he directed it himself, the tone would have been far blacker, so Clarence's death would not seem quite so out of step tonally. The ending of Clarence's death is difficult to come by (hence it not being featured above), though is available on the new True Romance Blu-Ray, and it completely changes the film, so one can understand why Scott was apprehensive about going with it, given that it's hardly an ending to please audiences (though accepting the savage violence and race jokes they've already sat through, you'd think the audience might expect that). It's an ironic and poignant ending that suits the dark material, though again, one can understand why Scott - who "fell in love with the characters" - wanted them to live, especially given the emotional and dramatic thrust of the story.
