Though we don't know too many details as of yet, it has been confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will be reprising his role as the titular character in the sequel to 2016's Doctor Strange. Anticipation will be through the roof since the former neurosurgeon solidified himself as one of the most powerful beings in the entire MCU in Infinity War and Endgame.

There are plenty of stories to choose from for this sequel, however the thought of alternate timelines perfectly opens the door for the Last Days of Magic story line from the comics. As the name suggests, the power of magic is fading from the world, and it is up to the Sorcerer Supremes, past, present, and future, to save it.

The failing of magic could easily be tied into either the use of the infinity stones, or the Avengers and Thanos playing with time too much as the Doctor himself was warned against by Mordo. It is just a simple step from this to evolve Mordo into the main antagonist of the movie.

This would allow the audience to see into the past to Merlin and a young, naive Ancient One and into any number of alternate timelines. There may even be a timeline where Strange never made it to Kamar Taj, and the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme fell to Mordo, Wong, or even Kaecilius.
