10 Alternative Comics That Would Make Killer Movies

7. Fables

Plot: The premise of Fables, created by writer Bill Willingham, is a simple one; fairytale characters are exiled from their homeland and living in New York. So far, so 'meh', but what makes Fables stand out are the alternative versions to the creatures you remember from childhood. The series inverts the images of well-known characters from folklore, and the story arcs all take the form of a different genre with caper stories, conspiracy thrillers and murder-mysteries all featuring. The Pitch: Del Toro does Grimm. Why It Would Make A Killer Movie: Fables offers viewers a chance to see their favourite childhood characters like never before; Prince Charming is a lying cheat, Snow White is sleeping with the Big Bad Wolf and Goldilocks is a homicidal maniac (to name but a few). The series is surprisingly unflinching in its portrayal of well-known characters and the results are every bit as compelling as any of its fantasy competitors. Hopefully we won't have to wait long before we can get a glimpse of Willingham's creation as its been reported that Warner Bros. have commissioned a live-action film with Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel hired to direct. Arcel directed the Oscar nominated period drama A Royal Affair and wrote the screenplay for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, so it appears to have the right credentials to make Fables a hit.
