10 Amazing Actresses Hollywood Don't Know What To Do With
9. Mary Elizabeth Winstead
A Good Day to Die Hard. Final Destination 3. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. It's hard to sell the whole 'Mary Elizabeth Winstead deserves more' argument when she has rotters like these clogging up her CV. Someone who makes these kinds of movies (it's easy to chuck a few more in: The Thing remake, Death Proof, The Ring Two) can't possibly be a great actress worthy of major leading roles? Only Winstead is more than good enough, as she proved so spectacularly in 2012's indie breakout hit Smashed. Gifted the kind of complex, unsympathetic role Hollywood actresses used to get back in the 70s, Smashed features Winstead as an alcoholic school teacher trying to go sober. And she's extraordinary, plain and unremarkable when on the wagon, and wild and unpredictable off it. Think of Winstead's Smashed turn on the same level as Anne Hathaway going real and raw for Rachel Getting Married, and you've just about got it. It's not the only film role that's won her plaudits Scott Pilgrim and The Spectacular Now found Winstead some praise, too. But the quality top-flight roles have been few and far between so far for someone who has much, much more to give.
