10 Amazing Character Moments In The Matrix Trilogy

8. Mifune - The Last Stand Against The Sentinels

Characters who operate almost exclusively outside the Matrix don't get as much praise or attention as they should. Between Commander Lock and the Zion residents, there aren't many people to root for. It's why the Wachowski's gave audiences a character on the ground of Zion to follow during the Sentinel invasion, and that character was Captain Mifune.

As the badass drill sergeant, Mifune leads the mech suit defence of Zion in The Matrix Revolutions. With "The Kid" on reload duty, Mifune runs out of ammo (quite a few times) and orders a top-up. The Kid narrowly reloads Mifune's big guns, but it's too late as a swarm of Sentinels descend upon them. The Kid takes shelter behind Mifune's suit, and Mifune goes out in a blaze of bloody glory as he fires wildly at the Sentinels. Mifune takes one hell of a licking as the Sentinels cut him to ribbons.

The scene carries more narrative weight given the exchange between Mifune and The Kid earlier on, and as Mifune dies from his injuries he passes control of his mech suit and the responsibility of letting in The Hammer ship to The Kid. It might not be a scene that involves any of the core heroes, but it certainly inhabits one of the better character arcs in The Matrix Revolutons.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
