10 Amazing Horror Anthology Films You Have To See
5. The Theatre Bizarre
Loosely inspired by the real life Grand Guignol in Paris, The Theatre Bizarre opens with an insane woman wandering into an abandoned theatre. Inside, she's greeted by a ridiculously creepy mechanical puppet telling her to enjoy the show, and then the film launches into a series of shorts. After each one concludes, the movie cuts back to the frame narrative as the puppet seems to be turning into a human, and the woman appears to be turning into a puppet.
In the stories, a vacationing couple runs into a witch, another couple comes to terms with the end of their relationship, a man suffers violent dreams, a mother and daughter discuss the meaning of life and death, a murderer takes the fluid from her victims' eyes and injects it into her own eyes, and a guy falls for a girl with a bizarre food fetish.
This is without a doubt one of the strangest movies you'll ever see, even if some of those segments don't sound that out there on the surface. The movie is relentlessly bleak and messed up, as if you're watching something directed straight from the pits of hell. It's not an easy one to recommend, as it's often rather inaccessible and more disturbing than it is scary, but if you're into screwed up films that will make you question your sanity, The Theatre Bizarre is at the top of that list.
