10 Amazing Horror Movies That Almost Never Got Made
4. The Exorcist (1973)
There's no doubt in anyone's mind that The Exorcist is one of, if not the, most iconic horror movie of all time. This chilling tale of a possessed girl and two priests is a cornerstone of not just horror but cinema in general. That said, this movie seemingly had to battle its own supernatural forces just to exist (as covered in The Exorcist from Novel to Film).
The original Exorcist novel sold poorly upon release, only hitting it big after William Peter Blatty's (the author's) appearance on the Dick Cavett Show, where he discussed the existence of the Devil. It was then bounced around the studio system, with Blatty turning many offers down after attempts to keep him from being a producer on the film.
When filming finally happened, it was nothing short of a nightmare. This infamously troubled production is often labelled as a cursed movie, thanks to all the on-set tragedies. There were many major accidents, including a carpenter losing a thumb, both Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair suffering severe back injuries after being subjected to botched stunts, and a lighting technician losing a toe. These injuries, alongside multiple deaths and other incidents, ballooned the filming schedule and the budget.
Everything eventually came together in a perfect storm, but one that nearly blew right over everyone.
