10 Amazing Horror Movies That Almost Never Got Made

3. Mulholland Drive (2001)

The late, great David Lynch's Mulholland Drive may not be a horror movie in the most traditional sense, but it is unsettling, frightening, and freaky enough for many to consider it one. There's certainly no argument here, especially after the infamous "Evil Hobo" jump scare. Still, this spooky flick was intended to be something entirely different and came dangerously close to the chopping block.

Mulholland Dr. was conceived as a 90-minute TV pilot for a full continuous show. It was pitched to the ABC Network with plenty of fanfare, thanks to the success of Lynch's groundbreaking series, Twin Peaks, and the project's thrilling premise. However, that enthusiasm soon melted like ice cream in a heatwave when ABC were shown the pilot episode.

The network representative who watched the pilot (as per Weirdsville USA: The Obsessive Universe of David Lynch) reportedly hated it, encouraging ABC to withdraw their interest. This incredible project would have died there had it not been for the same heroes who saved Martyrs, Canal+, who convinced Lynch to convert the project into a feature-length movie.

Thankfully, that's exactly what happened, leading to a title many consider to be Lynch's magnum opus.
