10 AMAZING Horror Sequels That Shouldn’t Have Worked
9. Unfriended: Dark Web
Unfriended centres around a group of high-school friends who are terrorised by a vengeful spirit during a Skype chat.
Being one of the earliest horrors to take place entirely online, the screenlife indie should've been a stand-out. Unfortunately, Unfriended was let down by horror tropes, thin character development, and poor writing. Nevertheless, it fared well at the box-office, which inspired a follow-up.
Of course, not much was expected from Unfriended: Dark Web, since the original was poorly received. It was also bewildering how the sequel dropped the paranormal elements entirely, considering it played a key factor in the first movie.
Nevertheless, Dark Web succeeded in every aspect where Unfriended failed. The sequel mainly focuses on two characters speaking at a time, making it significantly easier to follow. Rather than dealing with another ghost, Dark Web revolves around a dangerous section of the Internet that's rarely been touched upon in the genre, despite being terrifyingly real.
The underrated sequel also benefits from a tighter script, more believable performances, and a focus on escalating dread instead of cheap shocks and gore.
It was odd for Dark Web to ditch the supernatural that defined the original but it worked out in the end.
