Saving Private Ryan is widely considered to be one of the very best war movies ever made. While the action sequences are stunning, the characters are what make this film so great, especially Tom Hanks as Captain Miller.

The captain of a squadron that lands on the beach on D-Day, Miller has a terribly tough job. He must keep his men together and focused on the mission throughout their harrowing journey through German occupied France.

There is constant banter about Miller's home life, and what his profession back home was. He is very secretive about this, so much so in fact that there is a betting pool on what his profession was before the war.

After losing several men, one of which was particularly gruelling, the band of soldiers begins to break. They start to turn on each other, as they don't know how to handle what they've just been through. As one of the members points a gun at one of the other soldiers and threatens to shoot him, Captain Miller breaks the tension with a monologue that shuts everyone up.

In this stirring scene, Miller gives the full details on his life back home, and how afraid he is that the war is changing who he was when he left. While Matt Damons monologue later in the film is absolutely spectacular, Millers speech to keep his men calm is truly something special.
