10 Amazing Movie Monologues

6. Apocalypse Now - Horror Speech

Fight Club Tyler Durden Brad Pitt
United Artists

There should be no surprise here, as this monologue at the end of Apocalypse Now is one of the most infamous moments in all of cinema history.

In Apocalypse Now, a squad is sent to hunt down a rogue special forces agent (Kurtz) who has gone awol in the heart of Vietnam. After a tense and unrelenting journey through the heart of the country, they finally find him hiding within a group of locals.

While at first it appears that he has completely lost his mind, Kurtz gives a spine chilling speech that makes all too much sense. The brilliant and terrifying thing about this speech, which focuses on the horror of war, and the brutality that man is capable of, is that as it unnerves the viewer, it is impossible not to understand exactly what Kurtz means.

Apocalypse Now could be considered an anti Vietnam War movie, but within this speech it becomes apparent that it is a movie about the horrors that men are capable of inflicting on their own kind. Whether watched in the context of the movie, or simply on its own, this is a speech that will stick with you for years to come.
