5. Fight Club - A Spiritual War

Fight Club Tyler Durden Brad Pitt
20th Century Fox

This speech is one that is aimed directly at our generation. Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is speaking to his subordinates, but in reality he is speaking directly to the viewers.

"We are an entire generation pumping gas, and waiting tables. Advertising has us working jobs we hate, so that we can buy stuff that we don't need. We have no great war, our war is a spiritual war."

These quotes outline the theme of the speech well. Everything that Durden says in this scene makes far too much sense, and it is a speech that really gets the viewer thinking. Our generation has no greater purpose to serve, there is no World War for us to band together and fight that evil.

These are hard words to take in, and they are only being used so that Durden can spur his cult followers into inciting mayhem. The real purpose of this speech can be taken in a different light though; since we do not have a greater purpose to fight for thrusted on to us, we can search for the things that we find personally worth fighting for.
