10 Amazing Movie Plot Twists That Never Get Talked About
5. Jacob's Ladder - Jacob Died In Vietnam
Like many that have come before or after it, Jacob's Ladder has suffered the inevitable reboot treatment. Although its 2019 remake is as forgettable as they come, the same can't be said for its 1990 predecessor.
A haunting portrayal of war and what it can do to a man, Adrian Lyne's Jacob's Ladder showcases one of Tim Robbin's finest performances on the big screen. Robbins stars as the titular Jacob, a troubled Vietnam veteran who struggles to decipher what is and isn't real as his visions and hallucinations become all the more deadly and disturbing.
This film is not for the faint-hearted. It's incredibly disturbing and equally distressing, dealing with complex components such as conflict and the consequences that conflict plays on the body as well as the mind.
The reason for these delusions and hallucinations, however, is a direct result of Jacob and his comrades being subjected to, and subsequently drugged with, 'The Ladder', a government-programmed, hallucinogenic drug with the sole purpose of increasing American soldier's aggression on the battlefield.
It isn't until the film's final moments that it's revealed that Jacob died from the injuries inflicted upon him during his time fighting on the frontline in Vietnam, thus revealing that his life post-Nam was nothing but a figment of his imagination during his final few minutes of life before death.
It's said that you see your life flash before your eyes as death's door nears, and Jacob's Ladder takes this theory to a whole new level.
