When hes not around, the world misses Will Smith. Ditto when hes wasting time doing cameos in fluffy, feelgood flicks like Jersey Girl and Anchorman, and no amount of mini-me Jadens Instagram updates can fill the gap. Just in the nick of time, then, Sony have announced the release of not one but two Bad Boys sequels. Although director Michael Bay will return to produce the fourth movie, the reigns of the third have been handed to rookie Joe Carnahan, known mostly for co-directing NBC crime drama The Blacklist. While that gives him plenty of experience of high speed car chases and ruthless shootouts, Carnahans work tends to have a touch of film noir so expect Bad Boys III to be dark, dingy and laced with black humour. While the studio is staying tight-lipped about how the story will develop, Smith will reprise the role of haplessly cool police detective Mike Lowrey alongside wise-cracking partner Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence), a classic cinematic partnership that is crucial to the continued success of the franchise. And considering we left the boys being washed downstream on inflatable mattresses while belting out the Bob Marley lyric what you gonna do when we come for you?, whatever capers await our heroic duo promise to be as funny as they are thrilling.
