British crime thrillers dont usually grab the headlines, though 2004s Layer Cake surprised everyone when it broke out of the cult appreciation bracket to snatch a decent return at the box office. Starring then-little known Daniel Craig as a shadowy drug mule known only as XXXX, the movie was a grimy affair full of bad dope, underhand deals and shady romance culminating in revenge so bloody it came on like a low-budget Godfather relocated to mid-90s London. Eleven years on, however, and with Daniel Craig now a global superstar thanks to his commandeering of the James Bond role, it seems a humble British gangster flick is beneath him. Thus, fellow English hardnut Jason Statham is taking up the role of XXXX in the Layer Cake sequel, due to hit screens in 2017. Just as the original film was based on a book by J.J. Connolly, so is the second. Viva La Madness, which sees XXXXs retirement in the sun prove short-lived thanks to the lucrative lure of the Transatlantic drug trade, takes the drugs, violence and sex of its predecessor and cranks the dial up to ten.
