10 Amazing Movies That Bombed At The Box Office

2. Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory

The Iron Giant
Paramount Pictures

Budget: $3 million

Box Office: $4 milllion

Beloved the world over, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory has stood the test of time to become one of the most endearing children's movies of the 20th century. The term "children's movie" is used very loosely in this context, as we are all still wondering exactly what happened to the children at the factory after their "accidents".

Gene Wilder gives a legendary performance as the eccentric, slightly unhinged but endearing Willy Wonka. It's a brightly coloured movie filled with wonder..... pure imagination if you will. The songs are timeless, even children today are at least partly familiar with the various Oompa Loompa songs (no thanks to Tim Burton's nightmare fuel that is the 2005 remake).

Children were equally enthralled and terrified by the movie. The whimsical sense of adventure and bright colours call back to The Wizard of Oz, but the impossible sense of space of the factory feels like The Overlook Hotel from The Shining. It really is a one of a kind movie, especially one aimed towards children.

Of course, this movie wasn't loved the world over. Roald Dahl himself disowned the film for a variety of creative differences to his original source material, most notably the choice to place more emphasis on Willy Wonka and less on Charlie Bucket.

Despite not making the biggest commercial splash on impact, it's now become one of the most widely celebrated children's movies of all time.
