10 Amazing Movies That Didn't Receive An Oscar Nomination

2. Don't Look Now

The Film: The thriller and horror genres combined quite abstractly in Brit helmer Nicholas Roeg's masterwork. Adapted from Daphne du Maurier's chilly short story, the film sees Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as John and Christine Baxter, a grief stricken pair trying to overcome their problems in picturesque Venice. But as fans of the story and movie alike will attest, there is something grim lurking in the catacombs of this Italian city.

The film is a film scholars sweaty wet dream, with colours (the reds, oh the reds), semiotics and cross cut editing styles giving the film subtext, beneath the subtext, beneath the black waters of the eerie canal system. Oh, and to help along said dream, it has a pretty graphic scene where Christie and Sutherland bump uglies. All of the aforementioned points complete a film that is quite unlike any other. So with all this great directing, cinematography and performances, it was disappointing that Don't Look Know didn't get a look in when it came to nomination time for the 46th Academy Awards, with, to be fair, some decent films winning the top prizes in The Sting and Paper Moon. Still, this picture more than any that year should have been in contention. What Nominations It Should Have Received: Best Picture, Best Director (Roeg), Best Cinematography (Anthony B. Richmond) and Best Original Score (Pino Donaggio).
