10 Amazing Music Movies You Must See Before You Die
6. 24 Hour Party People
Manchester is a city embedded in Britain's musical folklore. From the post-punk uprising of the early 1980s through to the acid house movement of the early 1990s, Manchester had a sound and a look that no other city could match. It was, quite simply, 'Madchester'. And my how the nickname was appropriate, for unlike the music scene in London, Manchester was never very good at the slick, business side of things. Instead, total chaos reigned, and that's the vibe tapped into by 24 Hour Party People. Boasting a roll call of British acting excellence Steve Coogan, Simon Pegg, Rob Brydon and Paddy Considine to name but a handful the movie remains a cult classic to this day. What makes it such a success is director Michael Winterbottoms warts and all approach. Instead of painting Madchester as a bunch of best mate bands keen to give each other a leg up, he documents the jealousy, resentment and attempts at sabotaging other bands' success with unflinching realism, along with the brutal - and sometimes fatal - fallout of drink and drug use.
