10 Amazing Music Movies You Must See Before You Die

4. Dig!

The Brian Jonestown Massacre should have been the biggest band in the world. The Dandy Warhols should have been the second biggest band in the world. Dig!, directed by Ondi Timoner, goes some way to explaining why it never happened. The continuous thread throughout the film is the relationship between the two frontmen, Anton Newcombe and Courtney Taylor, acting as both a microcosm of the bands' love/hate relationship and a clue as to why neither ultimately achieved the success their music deserved. Over seven years Timoner documented the surging highs and bitter lows of life on the road, from inter-band brawling to fist fights with fans via tourbus tedium and excessive drink and drug use. So far, so rockumentary, but the real success of the movie lies in the deeper story; the anger, jealousy and bitterness from both sides. This isn't a rag to riches tale, nor a shock-doc of bad behaviour, rather a raw portrayal of rock 'n' roll's greatest underachievers as they slowly disintegrate.
