10 Amazing Plot Twists In Otherwise Awful Movies
7. The Da Vinci Code - Sir Leigh Teabing Did It
The Da Vinci Code is a dreadful film that's even worse than its deeply flawed source material - an insufferable and dull thriller with a beyond-nonsensical plot that'll drive everyone, historians in particular, to the very edge of insanity.
It's a movie that's monumentally dumb yet completely unaware of it, and its two sequels largely followed suit. There is, nevertheless, one important and positive way in which The Da Vinci Code does differ from its two sequels. All three movies have twist villains, and while Angels & Demons and Inferno bungled this big-time, The Da Vinci Code's twist villain actually works surprisingly well.
It turns out that Sir Leigh Teabing (Ian McKellen), a British historian and Robert Langdon's (Tom Hanks) ally, is the killer who's trying to obtain the Holy Grail and expose a huge secret about the Catholic Church (that Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene were married and sired a bloodline).
This reveal is unexpectedly good considering the rest of the film's lack of logic. It makes sense, but doesn't feel overly obvious, and also, Ian McKellen is always awesome. In a completely ridiculous story, this is perhaps the only part that was actually clever.
