It’s no secret that directors occasionally manipulate their actors in hopes of getting a more honest performance from them, particularly when it comes to stunts or shocking reveals in a movie.

A famous example of this is in Alien when Ridley Scott neglected to inform his cast that a creature would burst through John Hurt’s chest in the movie’s most iconic scene. Or in Die Hard, when Hans Gruber fell to his death earlier than Alan Rickman was expecting in order to capture a look of genuine fear on the actor’s face.

Aren’t movie directors lovely people?

David Fincher also implemented this technique during Se7en, when the SWAT team burst into the bedroom only to discover the ‘sloth’ victim tied to a bed. The director did not tell the actors that the victim was still alive, so when the body suddenly begins moving, the terrified reaction of the SWAT team is completely real.
