10 Amazing Trailers That Tricked You Into Seeing Terrible Sci-Fi Movies

8. Godzilla (2014)

American Godzilla movies seem to have an affinity for hyping everybody up with stunning trailers, then delivering something mediocre at best and unwatchable at worst.

1998's Godzilla movie promised something epic, only to deliver a steaming pile of, well, you know, fish. Still, while that one has been talked to death, this 2014 reboot went even further. It produced one of the most captivating trailers of the last decade, but a movie that was nowhere near as exciting as this near 3-minute ad.

The trailer started with a passionate speech from Bryan Cranston, which was enough to make you wonder if you could win awards for trailer acting. It also combined phenomenal music/imagery with ominous choir singing and some massive set pieces, including the epic parachute drop. Another genius move was to keep Godzilla himself as ambiguous as possible, with fleeting glances making the titular beast seem colossal and terrifying.

This trailer was the kind of hair-raising, chill-inducing experience that got you thinking a cinematic masterpiece was on the horizon. Unfortunately, the trailer's brief Godzilla appearances carried over into the movie, as you barely saw anything of 'Zilla. Oh, and remember that epic performance from Cranston? Yeah, he was dead barely a quarter of the way through. *Sigh*.
