10 Amazing Trailers That Tricked You Into Seeing Terrible Sci-Fi Movies
3. Transformers: The Last Knight
Transformers is, in many ways, just like the Terminator franchise in that they've both got fighting robots, one-word titles beginning with the letter T, and an affinity for tricking people with great trailers for crappy movies. However, of all Michael Bay's nostalgia-killing Autobot flicks, the trailer to this fifth instalment lured you in the most.
Now, this was a trailer with some promise behind it. It made this film look like the franchise's attempt to become profound and meaningful whilst still playing into the chaotic action the series was known for. It did this by taking you on a tour of war throughout history, showing a montage of battles from across the ages and mixing Transformers into it.
This approach made the movie look like a mixture of sci-fi and high fantasy, with a healthy dose of historical fiction chucked in. There was a clear hook to draw you in before finally pulling you out of the water with the shocking Optimus Prime heel turn. No way!
In the end, the film ended up being a fresh direction for the series, offering a thoughtful mixture of spectacle and emotional storytelling. Just kidding! It was obviously more of the same, with witless writing, jumbled storytelling and an overuse of CGI/explosions.
