10 Amazing Trailers That Tricked You Into Seeing Terrible Sci-Fi Movies
2. Prometheus
In the line-up of movies in Ridley Scott's Alien series, Prometheus is the one that often feels the most out of place. It seems like a flick that's desperate to be its own thing yet still acts as a quasi-prequel to the original movie. From the get-go, you could tell that it wanted to do something different with the franchise, and this trailer kicked that into high gear.
This ad throws connotations of a sci-fi epic your way right from the start, with grand ideas and giant spaceships. You get an instantly intriguing narrative, with a group of scientists finding a message throughout the stars and heading to that location before the tension and horror bumps up.
It's the pacing that really sells this one, as it starts slow and deliberate, painting the picture of discovery and hope. Then, as things begin to unravel and danger rears its ugly head, there is a tonne of quick cuts filled with blaring music, making the whole thing look like an utter nightmare. Also, the rampant destruction and Giegeresque imagery make it look like a visual delight.
Of course, while Prometheus had some great ideas at heart, the film itself ended up being a confusing, jumbled mess, with the visuals and Michael Fassbender's David being the only positive talking points.
