10 Animated Movies That Disney Should Adapt Into Live-Action
5. Treasure Planet
Like The Black Cauldron, Treasure Planet is an ambitious film that didn't quite work out the way Disney hoped it would.
Combining hand-drawn 2D animation with 3D animation, and the first Disney film to be simultaneously released in both regular cinemas and IMAX, it is far from a failure- but it can certainly be improved upon, hence why it's one of the more appropriate candidates for a translation into live action.
A simple story with a cast of lovable characters, we've seen how Treasure Planet can be liberally adapted by The Muppets - Robert Louis Stevenson's text can be adhered to more or less than the animated original, depending on the filmmaker and writer in charge.
But besides Star Wars, Disney hasn't really portrayed the vastness of outer space without doing so through an established brand. This could be the film to launch a stunning space opera to make kids fall in love with science fiction in the same way that Star Wars has. And they have a few little-known films that feature Pirates, proving its subject matter that can score big at the box office.
And at its heart, it's a rather sweet tale of a boy looking for a father figure. But this would be another case of recasting as a girl would not affect the material, and might improve it- a film such as Interstellar demonstrates that a Father-Daughter relationship is an under-utilised relationship that can be just as profound and moving.
The filmmakers would be wise to look at what worked in the original- it is a visually distinct film- but look more towards the original novel Treasure Island. Ideally, a new live-action adaptation would be very different from the original film.
