10 Animated Movies That Disney Should Adapt Into Live-Action

4. Atlantis: The Lost Empire

If Treasure Planet drew on Robert Louis Stevenson, then Atlantis: The Lost Empire was influenced by an author whose work also extended to a certain visual style- Jules Verne. Following a crew searching for Atlantis in 1914, it is the epitome of steampunk look, and reminiscent of Captain Nemo and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea- with the upcoming Bryan Singer adaptation of Verne's novel, now might be the perfect time to have another look at Atlantis.

Like H.R. Giger's involvement with the Alien franchise, Atlantis was defined by the influence of Mike Mignola- so the first step should be to bring him onboard from the start as a full-on visual consultant and make the look of the film (bar the animation of characters, of course) reminiscent of what we have seen on screen with Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy films.

And much like Pocahontas, this could be a film of our times- it is generally thought that Atlantis is a critique of imperialism and capitalism, and at a time where we've seen a resurgence of an imperialist mindset, and capitalism is under more scrutiny than ever before, this might be the right time for a film to address it- much like Zootroplis dealt with racial segregation and inequality. Pretty heavy for an animated family movie!

Of all the disney films on this list, Atlantis: The Lost Empire is the one that would be the most incredible to look at in live action. It's an epic vision that this writer would certainly love to see on the big screen! It's been a while since we've seen an optimistic, rollicking adventure film like the Indiana Jones series, and Atlantis is Disney's most exciting chance to bring that back to audiences.
